SMI operates as part of the CMC Steel Group companies in the Manufacturing division of Dallas-based Commercial Metals Company (NYSE:CMC). The 75 coast-to-coast operations of the Steel Group consist of steel minimills, rebar and structural fabrication plants, joist producing facilities, and value-added processes.

In late 2001, CMC Steel Group announced the acquistion of an exclusive license from Osprey Metals, Ltd. to produce corrosion resistant stainless steel clad products.  Production of the stainless steel clad bars began in mid-2002 after several months of preparation, planning and testing.
